Helen is a Clinical Nurse specialist in Contraception and Sexual Health. Previously described in the ‘Nursing Times’ as a courageous innovator, Helen qualified as a nurse in 1978 at Westminster Hospital and has since worked as a Senior Staff Nurse at St Thomas’ Hospital, a District Nursing Sister in Kensington and Chelsea. She entered the field of contraception back in 1986 and from 1991-2001 she was the UK’s first Outreach Clinical Nurse Specialist in Contraception and Sexual Health, covering the central south London multi-ethnic borough of Lambeth, where she set up ‘free condom supply points’, now morphed widely into The C-Card Scheme. She has a passion for women’s health and for teaching others about it.
She currently works part time for the NHS and is the contraception lead and CQC registered manager for MSH Health and Wellbeing CIC, based in Central London. She is a director of Sexplained Ltd, and has an accredited sexual health training programme, to teach students worldwide. Helen is passionate about sexual health and informing the public as well as healthcare professionals in this area. She owns Knox Publishing, and has written and published four books on the topic, which are available in both print and e-book formats globally. Additionally, since 2001, she has been an agony aunt for the highest circulating health magazine in Barbados and surrounding islands; and in the early ‘naughties’ she ran two award winning interactive, online ‘cyber clinics’ dealing with questions related to these topics. Helen has frequently appeared on phone in shows on radio and TV, both in the UK and overseas.
