Unfortunately, our periods can sometimes act as a trigger for Bacterial Vaginosis. The average period lasts between four and five days. However, menstruation for seven days or more can make our vaginas less acidic. And a healthy vagina needs to be slightly acidic to control the growth of micro-organisms that can cause infections such as BV.
The typical symptoms of BV include:
- A fishy smelling discharge
- Grey, thin or watery discharge
If you tend to get BV around the time of your period, there is a solution. Try using an acidifying treatment such as Balance Activ® towards the end of your period. It will help bring your vagina back into balance.
Balance Activ® contains lactic acid to restore the natural acidity of your vagina and relieve BV symptoms. It also contains glycogen, which provides nutrients to encourage the growth of lactobacilli, the protective bacteria that maintains a healthy level of vaginal acidity.
There are other treatments on offer too, such as antibiotics available on prescription.
As we get older, there’s more chance of heavy periods caused by an underlying health condition, such as fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease and polyps of the lining of the womb.
You should talk to a healthcare professional if you suspect something may be causing your heavy periods.
