Understanding vaginal infections
Did you know that vaginal discharge can vary in
consistency, colour and odour?
It is completely natural for women of
childbearing age to have some vaginal discharge. However, a change
in your discharge may mean that something is up down below.
Vaginal infections occur when bacteria, fungi or viruses grow,
or become imbalanced, in and around the vaginal area. They may or
may not be sexually transmitted.
Symptoms of vaginal infections:
- Change in discharge eg smell or colour
- Abnormal ‘fishy’ odour
- An itching or burning sensation in and around the
vagina
- Discomfort when urinating, or during sex

The three most common vaginal infections affecting women in
their reproductive age are: Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), Candidiasis
(Thrush) and Trichomoniasis (Trich) all of which can cause
discharge, odour, irritation or itching.
BV and intimacy
Is BV affecting your personal
life/relationships?
A recent survey of visitors to this website found that three
quarters (75%) of women with BV admit it has prevented them from
‘getting intimate’ with their partner and feel that BV is affecting
their personal relationships more than any other aspect of their
lives.
It’s not just the physical symptoms that are
embarrassing; BV can affect your self confidence too. 88% of you
admit to feeling unattractive, and not being active in the bedroom.
In fact, over three quarters (77%) of you are too embarrassed to
tell your partners and 1 in 10 have even resorted to ending a
relationship.
Despite this, over three quarters (77%) of women have been
suffering for up to five years however, over a third (37%) are not
currently treating it. If this sounds like you there is no need to
suffer in silence; BV can be easily treated, so take action
now!
