Sometimes BV can go away on its own as your body restores its own natural pH balance. If it doesn’t you can talk to your doctor or pharmacist or visit your GUM (Genitor-Urinary Medicine) or sexual health clinic for advice.
You can buy pessaries and gels such as Balance Activ® online or in pharmacies. These encourage the growth of lactobacilli, limiting the growth of bacteria that cause the smell and discomfort, and helping your body to restore its natural pH.
In the UK, your doctor can also prescribe you antibiotics to treat BV.
BV sometimes comes back, and treatment trials have shown it recurring in more than half of women within three months of treatment with antibiotics.
If you have recurrent bouts of BV, though, it’s wise to ask your doctor or sexual health clinic to test your discharge via a laboratory, in case other bacteria are involved, which may need a different treatment and it is also important to keep up to date with your cervical smear tests.
