The fishy smell that is often associated with bacterial vaginosis comes from the overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria in the vagina when the normal balance of bacteria is disturbed. These are bacteria that can grow without the need for oxygen. Another condition called Trichomoniasis, (TV or Trich for short), can sometimes cause a bad smell and is also very common and easy to treat. TV is, however, a sexually transmitted infection, so careful diagnosis and partner tracing and treatment are essential in this instance. If you’re not sure, you can go to your doctor or sexual health clinic where they can test you to find out what the problem is.
