BV in itself is not dangerous, it is just unpleasant and most women are able to quickly and easily treat it.
In a few rare cases if recurrent BV is left untreated it can lead to further complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease. Having untreated BV can also make you more at risk of catching other infections such as chlamydia so it is worth being tested fully, and treating if it hasn’t gone away by itself.
If you’re pregnant it is especially important to speak to your doctor or midwife about treating BV as it has been associated with pregnancy complications such as premature birth, miscarriage and secondary infections.
